So, I was thinking about the quote in the baby card I recently posted:
“A baby is God’s opinion that the world should go on.”
– Carl Sandburg
I don’t know much about Sandburg, and I’m not sure we would agree about God and his purposes, but I still love this quote. The world is a hard place, often full of suffering and death. But God clearly hasn’t given up on it yet, because he keeps it going. He isn’t cynical. He is life, and he keepings bringing about new life. Babies are a sure sign of hope.
My book club is reading the novel Children of Men this month. I haven’t started it yet, but I know that it imagines a world in the early 21st century, in which no babies have been born for about 20 years. There’s no explanation anyone can find out; women just stopped getting pregnant. I’m fascinated to see what it has to say.
